The Fishers Freedom Festival awarded Jennifer Logan and Jessica Thomas of Fishers High School and Rebecca Pfeil and Sarah Chang of Hamilton Southeastern High School as its 2010 Ken Wright Community and Life Scholarship winners.  This is a continuing education scholarship opportunity for youth that reside within the Hamilton Southeastern School District.  The purpose of this scholarship is to encourage youth to volunteer their time and talents to their community.

All recipients were awarded a $1,000 check payable to the student at their school’s awards program held in May.  These checks must be used by the student towards college expenses.
The scholarship applications were judged on a point-based system.  Completeness and neatness of the application are taken into consideration.  All completed applications were postmarked or received in person by April 15.  Entries were judged based on the following criteria:
•  Must reside in Wayne, Fall Creek or Delaware Townships and registered as a senior student in any high school level institution or home schooling.

•  Community service or volunteer work with any not-for-profit organizations such as, but not limited to, Habitat for Humanity, Meals on Wheels, Humane Society, churches, youth groups, Red Cross, local senior citizens assistance or other community organizations.

•  Leadership positions or roles in volunteer and extra-curricular activities, such as team captain of an athletic team, elected student council representative, Scouts troop leader, drum major of a marching band, etc.  Be sure to list leadership roles related to volunteer service and extra-curricular activities separately from the participation in these activities, as participation in an activity and a leadership role in the activity count as two distinct and separate activities.

•  GPA of 2.0 or higher (based on a 4.33 grading scale).

•  Extracurricular activities such as involvement in the Arts, athletics, clubs, youth organizations, 4-H, or other scholastic and non-scholastic membership organizations.

•  Good attendance record.

Ken Wright was a prominent figure in Fishers and Hamilton County from being involved in numerous organizations and activities.  In 1989, Ken received the third Fishers Key to the Town Award in recognition for efforts to improve Fishers’ quality of life.  He had also been a member of the Festival Committee for years prior to his passing.  This scholarship was established in 1998 in his honor.  Last year, the Fishers Freedom Festival awarded Kelsey Sager and Claire Wilmoth of Fishers High School, Meghan Parrott of Hamilton Southeastern High School and Lisa Edwards of Cathedral High School as its 2009 Ken Wright Community and Life Scholarship winners.
