Up to four $1,000 scholarships are available to youth that reside within the Hamilton Southeastern school district to use for their continuing education after high school.  The Fishers Freedom Festival is accepting applications for the “Ken Wright Community and Life Scholarship” award which was developed to encourage youth to volunteer their time and talents to their community.

All winners will be awarded a $1,000 check payable to the student at their school’s awards program held in May.  These checks must be used by the student towards college expenses.

The scholarship applications are judged on a point-based system.  Completeness and neatness of the application are taken into consideration.  Entries are judged on the following criteria:

•  Must reside in Wayne, Fall Creek or Delaware Townships and registered as a senior student in any high school level institution or home schooling.

•  Community service or volunteer work with any not-for-profit organizations such as, but not limited to, Habitat for Humanity, Meals on Wheels, Humane Society, churches, youth groups, Red Cross, local senior citizens assistance or other community organizations.

•  Leadership positions or roles in volunteer and extra-curricular activities, such as team captain of an athletic team, elected student council representative, Scouts troop leader, drum major of a marching band, etc.  Be sure to list leadership roles related to volunteer service and extra-curricular activities separately from the participation in these activities, as participation in an activity and a leadership role in the activity count as two distinct and separate activities.

•  GPA of 2.0 or higher (based on a 4.33 grading scale).

•  Extracurricular activities such as involvement in the Arts, athletics, clubs, youth organizations, 4-H, or other scholastic and non-scholastic membership organizations.

•  Good attendance record.

All completed applications must be postmarked or received in person by April 15.  Applications are available by clicking here and can be turned in at the Fishers Freedom Festival office at 8601 East 116th Street in Fishers which is on the south side of 116th Street behind Fritz in Fishers car dealership and Gallery 116.  They may also be mailed to Fishers Freedom Festival, P.O. Box 930, Fishers, IN 46038.

Ken Wright was a prominent figure in Fishers and Hamilton County from being involved in numerous organizations and activities.  In 1989, Ken received the third Fishers Key to the Town Award in recognition for efforts to improve Fishers’ quality of life.  He had also been a member of the Festival Committee for years prior to his passing.  This scholarship was established in 1998 in his honor.  Last year, the Fishers Freedom Festival awarded Kelsey Sager and Claire Wilmoth of Fishers High School, Meghan Parrott of Hamilton Southeastern High School and Lisa Edwards of Cathedral High School as its 2009 Ken Wright Community and Life Scholarship winners.
